Fast Auroral Snapshot Explorer (FAST), the second mission in NASA's Small Explorer Satellite Program was a satellite designed to study the Earth's aurora. Its primary objective was to investigate the microphysics of plasma of auroral phenomena at extremely high-time and spatial resolution. It has helped scientists answer fundamental questions about the causes and makeup of the aurora. FAST was launched from a Pegasus rocket that crossed the Earth's auroral zones four times each orbit, and only collected high-resolution data while in those zones. It ventured high into the charged particle environment of the aurora to measure the electric and magnetic fields, plasma waves, energetic electrons and ions, ion mass composition, and thermal plasma density and temperature.

The Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopy Explorer (FUSE) astronomy mission was developed for NASA by the Applied Physics Laboratory of Johns Hopkins University, which has the primary responsibility for all aspects of the project, including both the development and operational phases of the mission. This is the first time that a mission of this scope has been developed and operated entirely by a university. Its primary objective was to explore the universe using the technique of high resolution spectroscopy in the far-ultraviolet spectral region to study the origin and evolution of the lightest elements created after the Big Bang, and the forces and processes involved in the evolution of galaxies, stars, and planetary systems. The satellite is part of NASA's Origins program and was launched as a joint US-Canada-France project.
